LEADERSHIP ROLE

  • Founder, Crohn’s & Colitis Society of Singapore

As a patient diagnosed with Crohn’s disease in 2011, Ms. Nidhi Swarup scanned the support services and realized that there was no dedicated organization to help patients living with Inflammatory Bowel Diseases (IBD). She briefed a few friends from Rotary Clubs, and they promptly responded to her call for help. With their professional expertise and vast experience in the charities sector, the Crohn’s & Colitis Society of Singapore was registered in 2012 to provide support not only for the patients but also for their family members.

Working closely with IBD Specialists across all leading hospitals, engaging volunteers and donors from Rotary Clubs and other stakeholders, Ms. Nidhi Swarup has brought attention to the estimated 2,000 IBD Patients in Singapore, of which about 300 are children.

In addition to services on the National Level, Crohn’s & Colitis Society of Singapore is a member of

ON AUTOIMMUNE DISEASES

When I was diagnosed with Crohn’s disease, it was the first time I had even heard of this illness. Then comes the fact that there are around 100 different auto-immune diseases. While Diabetes, Rheumatoid Arthritis are common and most of us would know someone who has either of these illnesses. Moreover, we know that there is no cure, just a management of symptoms. Yet, when we are diagnosed with any illness, we are taken aback when we are told that there is no cure.

Neither knowing a cause for an illness nor having a cure, leaves every patient ‘fire-fighting’ throughout life. Hence doing our part as a patient, being a partner in our care-plan is vital. This becomes more significant in the case of children who have a longer duration of time ahead of them.

MOTIVATION

Ms. Nidhi Swarup is deeply passionate about reaching out to patients, empower them to take charge of the situation. She believes in a holistic approach in this work. Some of the points she emphasizes:

“Developing compassion and respect for patients living with a chronic medical condition is a significant first step.”

“Look at a patient holistically, where the physical and emotional body are equally important.”
